The time to act is now!

I’m not only white, I grew up in “Whitelandia” – a wealthy suburb of New York City where “diversity” was Irish or Italian with maybe a German or Polish family thrown into the mix. We were all white. We were at all Catholic. I didn’t even know anyone who was Black until I went to a Catholic High School in another county. Not sure I would have even made any effort to have a relationship with the few Black girls in the entire school if they weren’t my basketball teammates.

Another week, another year (Pandemic weeks 8 & 9)

Weeks eight and nine have come and gone. So did Mother’s Day and my 55th birthday. My daughter encouraged me to host a Zoom birthday party which I did. It was fun. About 30 of my friends popped in over the course of the 90-minute party representing many areas of my life, nine states, and some relationships dating back fifty years. A party like that would never have happened without this pandemic…those people would never have been in the same “room” under “normal” conditions.

Some good news, please (pandemic week 7)

While at first, delving into daily updates was part of my routine. I have begun to avoid the news. Especially in the evening, for the same reasons I don’t consume caffeine past the afternoon. I start my weekdays with The Skimm (use this link to subscribe) so I remain knowledgeable of current affairs, and then I tune it out.

Do Virtual Races Count? (pandemic week 6)

2020 was supposed to be a big year for me. It’s my 25th year running. I also turn 55 (in 2 weeks!). I planned fun race goals involving “round numbers.” In February I managed to run my 10th marathon before the world changed. Later this year, I planned to run at least two half marathons, bringing that total to 50, and managing similar milestones for the 5 & 10k too (needed two more 10ks to reach 75 and seven 5ks for 125). Everything was on my race schedule!
