Weeks eight and nine have come and gone. So did Mother’s Day and my 55th birthday. My daughter encouraged me to host a Zoom birthday party which I did. It was fun. About 30 of my friends popped in over the course of the 90-minute party representing many areas of my life, nine states, and some relationships dating back fifty years. Running in Circles and Getting Nowhere (TheCauseCoach, October 2018) outlines the beginning of my health insurance issues since I moved out here. My “low-income” due to minimal effort in building my business in New Jersey as I was preparing for my move last summer (and totally disregarding any income from the sale of my home) left me eligible only for Illinois Medicaid. I thought I should just be able to “transfer” my health insurance purchased through the ACA from NJ to IL; that can’t be done apparently. Read more
When I set out to train for my first marathon over twenty-one years ago, I thought a fall race presented the best opportunity. Even after my second marathon – a spring race – I still believed it was easier to train through the summer than the winter. Of course, I was in my 30s and heat didn’t bother me as much as it does now.
As a coach, and with the experience of having completed eight marathons (four fall and four spring), I will, whenever possible, steer my clients to a spring race. Training through the harsh conditions of winter, I have learned, provides a better opportunity for building what my coach referred to as “mental fortitude.” This is so necessary for staying focused and pushing through in the final miles of the 26.2-mile trek.
