Summer unofficially always started Memorial Day weekend, even though in New Jersey, school wasn’t done until the middle of June and the calendar didn’t say so until a week after that. Regardless, summer was always time for creating memories – memories made on holiday weekends, family vacations, special outings with friends, and mostly a lot of unstructured time.

The final family summer road trip was to Disney World in 2007. It was going to be an epic two-week trip that included an extended stop-over in Savanah, Georgia on the way down and another in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor for 4^th of July weekend on the way home. We didn’t tell our daughter as we made the plan because we wanted to surprise her.

Family vacations are fond memories at least from my perspective as the child. Summer was for road trips. My favorite because I either enjoyed the new scenery or slept across the back seat of our Impala station wagon in the days before parents were conscious of the safety implications of that.

The Best Summer Ever! – that wasn’t

The plans were hatched during the winter break. Summer 2020 was going to be the best summer ever. Two young women halfway through college were going to spend the summer in Chicago living on their own. The apartment belonged to one; her roommate would be moving out at the end of the semester. It was located just a few short blocks from Lake Michigan and about a mile and a half from the beach!
